How Schema Therapy Works Against Depression
Did you know that depression is the leading cause of disability in the world? In fact, in Australia alone, it is said that 45% of the population will go through a bout of this at least once in their life. This is why help for depression should be available when it is needed.
There are various ways on how to deal with depression in the world of Psychology. Counseling, relaxation methods, and even fostering strong support groups are just some of the ways to overcome that despondent feeling of nothingness.
While all those mentioned above (and so many others) are quite effective, one well known psychologist in Sydney is advocating a procedure that may also be of great help to those who want to pull themselves out of their depression.
This is called Schema-Focused Cognitive Therapy.
In Psychology, schema is defined as an ‘organized pattern of thought or behavior’. Those suffering in depression are said to have maladaptive schemas as they are growing up, involving the following:
- Disconnection or rejection (mistrust, abuse, etc.)
- Impaired autonomy and/or performance (dependence, failure, etc.)
- Impaired limits (entitlement, grandiosity, etc.)
- Other Directedness (self-sacrifice, recognition-seeking, etc.)
- Over-vigilance or inhibition (negativity, pessimism, etc.)
As this is a straightforward talk on help for depression and not a lengthy scientific discourse on it, there really is no need to explain the various maladaptations in the schemas further. Besides, those that have been enumerated above are pretty much self-explanatory.
The more important thing that we will go through is how the psychological procedure that is Schema-Focused Cognitive Therapy or Schema Therapy for short is done to overcome depression.
There are three main steps in this cognitive-based treatment, starting with assessment (as it is important to know that schema was affected), experiential phase (so patients know how they use these everyday) and the behavioral change that the doctor will suggest and the patient will have to work on doing.
There are various techniques used as well such as Limited Re-parenting, Imagery, Flash Cards, Chair Work and Schema Diary. Also, psychologists all over the world are coming up with new ways that can be used to help their patients get rid of depression using said therapy.
The specific path that will be chosen will depend on the professional who is doing the treatment with the patient. Whatever that would be, it is a must that help for depression is provided early and should be provided fast.
